While creating a commissioned logo for Northwest Airlines
at the Tennessee international airport, the airline's in-flight
magazine chose Herd's portrait of native American
Saginaw Grant for
the November 1996 cover and included a feature story covering
other earlier earthworks.
"That Herd prefers the field to the
easel is no surprise, given his upbringing. He is as well
versed in the vernacular of the farmer as that of the artist."
"Herd
sees his work as a platform for discussing issues related
to humans and their relationship to the land."
LIsa
Kingsley for World Traveler magazine, November 1996
