Portrait of
Chief Satanta

Two inch squares, each representing 100 foot squares on the field, form the grid of the preliminary field drawing for Satanta, Herd's first earthwork. Kiowa Chief Satanta was an important participant in the historic Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty of 1867 and a symbol of Indian resistance to European encroachment.

"Two months later with the television cameras and writers from the coasts had departed, the ground was swept with an implement that severs the roots of the volunteer wheat that Satanta was composed of. This left a yellow stubble on top and for the first time, my flight over the field revealed the desired graphic with appropriate dark shadow."

"I managed to capture that image with one or two good photographs before it faded into obscurity."
Stan Herd, 1994
