Portrait of
Aldo Leopold

At the invitation of Wes Jackson and the
Land Institute of Salina Kansas -- Aldo Leopold's portrait was carved out of alfalfa in celebration of the early environmentalist's legacy. Leopold's family read passages from their father's writings to the accompaniment of Eugene Friesen on cello as the sun set over the four acre design.

The subtractive earthwork, which was computer altered for distortion free viewing from a 50 foot hilltop, was commissioned for the Land Institute's annual Prairie Festival, May 1998. This work was financed with the help of Pines International. The portrait is under consideration as a permanent Land Institute site.
