Portrait of
Amelia Earhart

Commissioned by Amelia's hometown of Atchison Kansas on the occasion of the Aviators 100th birthday celebration, this one acre earthwork is to become Herd's first truly permanent work (as an evloving work, his Medicine Wheel also has permanent aspects).

Created out of native stone with perennial grasses and other ground covers, the work has been in process for three years as it is accessed for its ecological adaptability. Many people in the community have volunteered to assist in the evolving work, which can be viewed from a nearby overlook.

As with most of Herd's work however, Amelia is best viewed from an airplane.
